Annual Mtg

Annual Meeting of the Club

Our Annual Meeting is coming up next Saturday, October 16th from 6-9 pm and will be held OUTDOORS at GPRA. We ask folks attending to follow our covid protocols. We will have food, beer and wine for purchase, split the pot, silent auction, warming fires, and you’ll get to hear our annual report and vote on new directors for our board and a bylaw change. This is your chance to ask questions of the ski club, hear about upcoming events, and get a recap of our last season. We promise to mix in the fun with the club stuff. Come to ask questions or to share your ideas or opinions. This is a great opportunity for us to hear your voice! We hope to see you there, dress warm!

Give all year

You can help support the Mat-Su Ski Club through the Fred Meyer Community Awards program and through Amazon Smile. Every little bit counts.

Adult Ski Lessons

We will offer adult ski lessons this winter! We’re still working on the details but plan to offer lessons in classic (diagonal) and skate skiing starting in January 2022. The lessons will mostly be oriented toward novice and beginner skiers. But, we also plan to offer opportunities for more advanced skiers that want to work on their technique. We’ll open registration later this fall. Look for an announcement in the November newsletter and on our Facebook page for more details about adult lessons and registration.

GPRA parking fines

The Mat-Su Borough is now enforcing the parking rules at GPRA and other Borough park sites. If you do not display a current Borough parking sticker or a day pass - you will get a $60 ticket, enforced by the Third District Court of Alaska. The Borough is checking the parking lot several times every day. The parking fees go into a Borough fund for recreational facilities. Click here to buy a day use or yearly parking pass online. Save $10 when you buy two and 2022 parking passes are available Dec 1st.

Junior Nordics News and Info

Important Update: If you are planning to rent skis for your Junior Nordics skier, please sign up! Ski pickups are next Friday & Saturday, October 15th and 16th. Click here to sign up.
The program sold out in record time this year and we wanted to thank everyone for their support of this incredible program! If you’re interested in volunteering please contact Allison: allison.fry@matsuski.org

Volunteer Opportunities Abound!

The Mat-Su Ski Club is mostly operated by volunteers. We have one paid part time staff person, Marla, who helps us immensely! If you’re interested in volunteering with us, we have several opportunities for the upcoming season.

Junior Nordics Coach - The Junior Nordic season runs from January 3rd, 2022 through March 4th, 2022. We have coaching openings on Monday & Wednesday or Tuesday & Thursday evenings (time commitment: 5:00-7:00pm per evening). You do not need to be an expert skier to coach Junior Nordic. We provide a coaching clinic at the beginning of the season to provide you with the tools you need. Coaches will receive a 2022 Mat-Su Borough Parking Pass for their volunteer efforts.

Trail Groomer - This might just be one of the best volunteer opportunities that a ski club can offer! The benefits of being a groomer are endless, but one of our favorites is getting first tracks on those beautiful trails! We will provide training and new this year is a groomer's schedule, so you'll know which days of the week you'll be grooming!

Thanks for the Volunteer Support!

Fall Trail Day Was Cancelled, BUT You Can Still Help! Thanks to the volunteer efforts in August we don’t have a lot of trail maintenance and preparations to do for the upcoming season. However, if you’re out on the trails within the next couple weeks before the snow flies, feel free to pick rocks and large sticks and throw them off the trail. If you see any trees down that are blocking part of a trail or any signs down or large holes anywhere, please let us know so we can get things picked up. The more eyes on the trails the better!

Borough parking passes

Remember - 8 hours of volunteer trail work recorded by the Mat-Su Ski Club or Valley Mountain Bikers and Hikers (VMBaH) earns one a Mat-Su Borough parking pass for the following year, custom delivered to your snailmail address. All you have to do is record your name and mailing address and hours on the appropriate Club's paperwork. Watch for emails and for postings on matsuski.org about volunteer opportunities.
All Junior Nordic coaches will receive a parking pass before the season starts.

Biathlon Venue

As you know, the Mat-Su Valley will host the Arctic Winter Games in 2024. The decision of where biathletes will compete is undecided. Will it be at Kincaid Park in Anchorage or at a new venue, constructed at GPRA? For information about a new Biathlon venue for Arctic Winter Games click here
